Editor's Note: Princess cut diamond rings are hot right now and this article does a good job of explaining what to do if you decide to buy this style of engagement ring. Enjoy.

Princess cut engagement rings have been around for about 30 years and have become a very popular choice. This style differs quite a bit some of the more traditional styles which are either round cut or square cut. This article will briefly go over why this particular style is so popular and also give you a few tips to keep in mind when selecting your ring.

The princess cut diamond is very beautiful and that is the main reason it is so popular. If you look at it you will see that it almost looks like an upside down pyramid with it's square or rectangular shape. The diamond is flat on the top which can also make it appear larger which is a good thing.

Diamonds are designed, styled or cut in a variety of ways. Diamond cuts can be round, oval, square or rectangular. However, a diamond cut does not refer to the stones shape. It is the proportions of the diamond such as its depth, width and uniformity of facets, which control the brilliance, durability and other features of a diamond. A good diamond cut is very important because without it the diamond will not sparkle even if it possesses outstanding color and clarity.

One of the most popular cuts is the emerald cut, which is an example of a rectangular cut. Emerald cut is a rectangular step cut with trimmed edges. It is a step cut because its broad, flat planes resemble steps on a staircase. Such diamond cut has a square or rectangular gem girdle outline with the steps of elongated facets parallel to the girdle, the sets on each of the four sides and at the corners.

The name emerald cut was derived because of the traditional usage and reference to emeralds. One of the most famous emerald cut diamond rings was worn by Lady Camilla Bowles, new wife of Prince Charles Windsor of Great Britain. This cut has a subtle and understated look with less flash " a reflection and refraction rather than the brilliant cut of a diamond.
